Who can enter?

We invite entries from teachers of English with their classes - students from state schools, who have been learning English for at least one year (children between 7 and 12 years old).

Competition

Classes will design English language picture books for Young Learners. Each child in the class will prepare (draw) a particular page of the book. The book should consist of at least ten pages but no more than the number of students in the class.

The picture book will consist of:

  • a cover page with the title: LOOK! I CAN DO IT! - YOUNG LEARNERS
  • contents of the book with the titles of each page and the names of the authors
  • pages on particular topics such as the following:
 
  my school sports a garden
  my family clothes jobs
  music food and drink a map
  fruit, vegetables home a zoo
  toys my room my classroom
  my face weather colours
  the body means of transport my school bag
  animals - zoo/ country animals/ pets, etc a city
  holidays - at the seaside a country
  holidays - in the mountains Christmas
 
The appearance of the page will depend on the child's imagination and ingenuity. Objects, which are on the page, should be named (a cat, a flower, a train, a nurse, etc…) All pages should be given titles (Animals, Jobs, My Family, etc…)

The competition is a collective task designed for the whole class and their teacher. The teacher will co-ordinate the collective project and manage the work of the children. Teachers should not interfere in their students' individual works, however they ought to explain to the class the rules of the competition and help them with language matters.

When all pages are ready, the teacher will put them together in the form of a book and send it to Examinations Services at the British Council, Lisbon.

Please note that an entry form (pdf file, 55k) must be attached to each work (book). The picture books together with the entry form should be sent to:

Terms of Competition
The competition will last until 31st March 2004 (deadline for receipt of books).

Results
The results will be announced on the British Council website (http://www.pt.britishcouncil.org/education/exams.htm) at the end of April 2004.

Prizes
The main prize for the whole class are University of Cambridge Young Learners English Tests - Starters, Movers and Flyers - funded by the British Council Examinations Services. Additionally, every winner and runner-up will receive a letter of congratulation with information about the prizes the classes have won. Other prizes and gifts are to be announced.
