The
British Council was established in Portugal in 1938 and is the oldest overseas Council representation in
continuous operation.
It maintains official bilateral programmes in Science,
Education, Technology, Information and the Arts.

| The British Council's main offices, libraries and
English Teaching Programmes are in Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto. There
are also branches in Almada, Alverca, Cascais, Foz do Douro, Maia,
Miraflores and Parede. |

The British Council is responsible, on behalf of the British Government,
for administering the British side of the Anglo-Portuguese Cultural
Convention jointly with the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. |

Since 1987 the British Council has been working with the University
of Cambridge's Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES), and is responsible
for the administration of its examinations in English as a Foreign Language
for the
whole of Portugal.
