  What we support

We support a very wide spectrum of arts activity:

The Performing Arts:

Drama and Dance

Individual and country tours;
Workshops;
Residencies by British directors and choreographers;
Co-productions;
Links and exchanges between British and foreign companies;
Training programmes;
A wide range of information services.

Music
We are involved with all forms of music, from early music, through classic ensembles, choirs and orchestras, opera and music theatre, to jazz, folk and rock.

Events take many different forms, from the single concert to country tours; to workshops; to education and training projects; to international collaborations and consultancies.

Films:
The British Council Films Department arranges for the selection and despatch of official British entries to approximately seventy international festivals each year.

Visual Arts:
We are responsible for the promotion in Portugal of painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, video, installation and other media used by British professional artists working in Britain, as well as crafts, design and architecture, with special emphasis on contemporary work.

How we support

In Portugal, we act in a bilateral, proactive way through the targeted promotion of all British art forms. We foster enduring partnerships with major Portuguese Arts Institutions (be they training, performing or visual arts/heritage institutions), with the firm objective of responding to their needs and interests.

top

The British Council is not primarily a funding institution, but rather an enabling body, specialising in networking. Our support is aimed at facilitating the transfer of information and specialist art support between Portuguese cultural agents and their counterparts in Britain. For example, we can help with the identification of a sponsor or group of sponsors for targeted arts projects.

top

We provide three kinds of support:

Logistical support:
we provide information and facilitate links between Portuguese cultural agents and their counterparts in the United Kingdom

Financial support:
we can provide an enabling contribution, and act as a guarantor of project quality

Sponsorship support:

we can identify sponsors or groups of sponsors for arts projects

If you are seeking our support, please note that we need to be involved with any project at the planning stage, which for most projects will be approximately eighteen months before any planned event.
